Selector-based scrapers depend on the page structure they query. MDN Web Docs explains that querySelector returns null when no element matches. When a platform changes its markup, selectors can stop finding profile names or post content. For developers maintaining several integrations, this creates a recurring repair task.
A social media scraping API offers another integration approach: request structured data rather than extract it from page elements yourself. Social Fetch documents endpoints accepting usernames, URLs, keywords, or post identifiers. The practical goal is to connect those responses to one predictable application workflow, while checking each endpoint’s actual capabilities.
A Step-by-Step Guide to Bringing Public Social Data Into One App
Start with a small feature, such as showing a public profile and its recent posts. Define the fields your screen needs before adding more platforms. The following steps move from authentication to a shared data model, then address the lookup outcomes that determine what users see.
1. Request a key and keep it on the server
Create an account and generate a key through the provider’s API Keys page. Social Fetch specifies https://api.socialfetch.dev as its base URL and x-api-key as the authentication header. Its quickstart recommends storing the credential in SOCIALFETCH_API_KEY and keeping it server-side.
Have your browser call your own backend route. That route should validate the submitted platform and identifier, attach the credential, and request the upstream data. Return only the information your interface needs.
OWASP recommends managing secrets throughout their lifecycle, including access control and rotation. For this integration, use a deployment secret store and keep credentials out of source control, screenshots, and routine logs.
2. Match the input to the endpoint
Choose the operation before constructing the request. A profile lookup, post lookup, and keyword search should have separate input rules. Social Fetch lists these input types, but the endpoint reference determines which parameter a particular route accepts.
For example, its TikTok profile endpoint uses GET /v1/tiktok/profiles/{handle}. The documented handle parameter accepts a username with or without a leading @. Replace the placeholder with your intended public handle and send the authentication header.
For post data, consult that platform’s post endpoint rather than inserting a post URL into a profile route. Check required parameters, supported filters, and pagination before building the interface. Begin with one working request per operation, then add another platform.
3. Read the JSON without assuming success
Send the request from your backend and inspect its HTTP status before accessing profile fields. MDN Web Docs notes that fetch does not reject simply because a server returns an HTTP error. Your code must check the response status explicitly.
Next, parse the response body with response.json(). Catch network failures and JSON parsing failures separately so your backend can return a controlled response. Avoid passing an unexpected upstream response directly into the browser.
The provider’s profile reference describes a data object and a meta object. Profile details sit under data.profile, while follower counts sit under data.metrics. Metadata includes a request identifier and API version. Some fields are nullable or optional, so validate them before rendering.
4. Map each platform into your own records
Create a small application schema containing platform, identifier, display name, profile URL, retrieval time, and lookup outcome. For posts, define separate fields for the post identifier, author, text, publication time, and available metrics.
Treat this as your design contract, rather than a promise that every network supplies identical information. Write an adapter for each operation. Preserve absent values as null instead of replacing missing engagement figures with zero.
Use platform plus identifier as your record key. Keep source URLs beside displayed content, and label retrieval times. For your social-data app, test adapters with saved sample responses before connecting them to dashboards, exports, or scheduled refreshes.
For a useful first test, submit a known public handle, an intentionally missing handle, and a simulated service failure. Confirm that each produces the intended screen state and that earlier saved records survive a failed refresh attempt.
5. Separate found, missing, and retryable outcomes
Social Fetch distinguishes HTTP status from lookup outcome. Its error guide says a 200 response can contain found, not_found, private, or restricted. An empty collection may need a separate profile lookup to clarify its meaning.
For found, validate and save the payload. For not_found, show a clear missing-result state. Preserve private and restricted as distinct outcomes. Never convert a failed request into evidence that an account has disappeared.
For a 503 response, honor Retry-After when supplied; otherwise use exponential backoff. Limit retry attempts. Authentication or malformed-request errors require correction before another attempt. Log request identifiers to support diagnosis.
Keep the Interface Stable as Sources Change
Build screens around validated records and explicit outcomes. Review endpoint changes and test representative responses before releases. This gives a multi-platform application a maintainable foundation while keeping unavailable data and temporary failures understandable to users.
