Different Types of Web Developers

Web developers

Webpages and websites can range from a straightforward one-page text document to complicated e-commerce sites with hundreds and thousands of products for sale. Simple web content can be the work of only one person, or it may take a team of individuals with different skills to create a sophisticated website.

Web Designer

A web designer is primarily focused on developing the design and feel of the website. A designer may work in a graphics editing software like Adobe Photoshop and provide what is essentially a drawing to the programmer, who converts it into code, or a designer may use software that creates the code for the pages, depending on how comfortable the designer is with programming code.

Web Programmer

A web programmer is one who converts the design to the actual code that controls a simple webpage. They are also the ones who program more complicated aspects of websites, such as databases, shopping carts, and online applications. The code for a simple page of text is relatively simple, so a designer with a little programming knowledge may be able to do it, but complicated e-commerce sites with many items for sale require an expert programmer.

Flash Developer

Adobe Flash is software that allows developers to create graphical, interactive, animated sites with movement and sound. Flash can be used for an introductory page, site navigation, or any other use the designer can imagine.

Content Developer

Web content is what is contained and displayed on most parts of the webpage. It is most frequently text but can also be video or audio or a combination of both. A content developer could be a writer or editor, a videographer, or an on-camera personality. Or they may be more than one of these, writing the content and then recording it in video form, for instance. Although this can be done by the same person who does many of the other web development tasks for a small website, it requires a different skill set, so it is often done by different staff in large website projects.
